What is the CDL internship?

The Casas de Luz internship was created to empower high school students and develop their leadership skills. We newly renamed our internship as the leadership team in 2018 to fully embrace the high school students as developing leaders. Our leadership team consists of high school students from high schools around the county in their sophomore to senior year.

As leaders, our volunteers work collaboratively with one another and the community to pursue individual or group large-scale projects as an extension of the CDL organization. Leaders are able to use their creativity and work with the team to turn their ideas into reality. Leaders also support the organization through organizing fundraisers among other technical duties that keep CDL running. Additionally, our students serve as leaders on home builds, facilitating activities and answering questions.

Through all of the duties of the leadership team, the high school students learn the cooperation and communication skills necessary for a real working environment. Not only are they given the opportunity to make a tangible change in Tijuana communities, but also to better themselves and gain exposure to an environment different from their own. Leaders are taught basic fundraising, leadership, effective communication, teamwork and initiative.

The leadership team meets once every three weeks on a Monday evening. During those 3 weeks leaders must meet a requirement of 9 hours of work. These hours are just a baseline to reach their individual and team goals.
